The Perks of Joining Business Networks: Why I Swear by It As An Artist

You know, when I first dipped my toes into the world of business networks, I wasn’t sure what to expect. Would it be just a bunch of people talking about economics and number-y stuff my artistic brain struggles to comprehend? (Spoiler alert: no.) What I found was a vibrant, buzzing network of entrepreneurs (from all fields, including performers, playwrights, musicians, and all kinds of artists) who are as passionate about what they do as I am about what I do. If you’re a creative on the fence about joining a business network, let me share why it’s been a game-changer for me and why it might just be for you too.

Why Joining Business Networks Changed My Creative Life

I joined Coach K's Business & Grant Community in 2025. Joining has been like finding a secret garden full of inspiration, support, and opportunities. It’s not just about applying for grants for my projects; it’s about connecting with people who get the entrepreneur life (because, as I've said before, if you're in the arts, you have to think and operate like an entrepreneur). You know, those moments when you’re struggling with how to get your message out there, and someone else says, “Hey, I’ve been there. Here’s what helped me.” That kind of support is priceless.

Plus, business communities often open doors to collaborations that you wouldn’t find otherwise. I’ve connected up with musicians and artists I met through these groups. It’s like having a supportive family that pushes you to grow and experiment.

And let’s not forget the practical perks. Many communities like Coach K's offer workshops, grant writing help, and even promotion opportunities. For someone like me, who’s always juggling the creative side with the business side, this kind of support is a lifesaver.

The Social Side of Joining Business Networks: More Than Just Networking

If you think business communities are just about networking, think again. Sure, meeting new people is part of it, as well as learning from the person who brought us together. (Coach K is a renowned expert on grants and business funding and was in fact fired from Wells Fargo for sharing such information with entrepreneurs, so learning from someone super-qualified is definitely a perk.)

But it’s so much deeper than that. It’s about building friendships with people who share your passion and understand the ups and downs of the entrepreneur life.

I remember the first time Coach K encouraged us to share about what we do online to the group, and I obliged. The energy was electric. People were genuinely excited to hear about both mine and each other’s work, offer feedback, and celebrate successes. It felt like a safe space where vulnerability was welcomed, not judged.

These connections in groups often lead to mentorships, where more experienced founders guide emerging ones. I’ve been lucky to have mentors who helped me navigate grant applications and the business side of my creative practice. And I also pay it forward by mentoring others. It’s a beautiful cycle of giving and receiving.

What type of art is in high demand right now?

You might be wondering, “Okay, but what should I be focusing on if I want to be part of a business community? Am I too creative to be a part of one?” No. Just by having a project and a concept that you want to bring to life, you're qualified. The arts landscape is always shifting, but here’s what I’ve noticed lately:

  • Multidisciplinary projects are huge. People love performances that blend music, theatre, and visual art. It’s like a feast for the senses.

  • Socially conscious art is resonating more than ever. Audiences want stories and performances that reflect real-world issues and spark conversations.

  • Interactive and immersive experiences are gaining traction. Think performances where the audience is part of the story, not just watching from the sidelines.

  • Digital art and virtual performances have exploded, especially after the pandemic. If you’re tech-savvy, this is a great avenue to explore.

The beauty of joining a community is that you get firsthand insight into what grantors are looking for, what audiences are responding to, and where funding is flowing. It’s like having a crystal ball for your creative career.

How to Make the Most Out of Your Business Community Experience

Joining is just the first step. To really reap the benefits, you’ve got to dive in. Here’s what I recommend:

  1. Be active - Attend events, participate in discussions, and share your work. The more you put in, the more you get out.

  2. Offer help - Whether it’s volunteering at events or sharing your skills, giving back builds strong relationships.

  3. Seek feedback - Don’t be afraid to ask for honest opinions. It’s the best way to grow.

  4. Collaborate - Look for opportunities to team up on projects. Two (or more) heads are better than one.

  5. Stay open-minded - You’ll meet entrepreneurs from all backgrounds and disciplines. Embrace the diversity; it will enrich your own work.

Remember, these communities are about connection and growth. The more you engage, the more you’ll find your creative voice and your tribe.

Why I Keep Coming Back to Business Networks

Honestly, it’s the people. The energy, the passion, the shared dreams - it’s addictive. Every time I attend a gathering or workshop, I leave feeling inspired and energized. It’s like a mindset recharge.

And beyond inspiration, there’s a real sense of empowerment. Knowing that there’s a network ready to support you - whether it’s through advice, resources, or just a listening ear - makes the creative entrepreneur journey less lonely and a lot more exciting.

If you’re looking for a place to grow your art, find collaborators, or just feel part of something bigger, I can’t recommend joining an art lovers club or a business community like Coach K's enough. It’s been a cornerstone of my creative life, and I’m confident it can be for you too.

So, what are you waiting for? Dive in, connect, create, and watch your art flourish like never before.

Stay educated,
