Stepping into the indie music scene may seem overwhelming for theatre composers. Traditionally, their focus has been rooted in dramatic storytelling and jazz standards, and melodies inspired by Golden Age composers such as Stephen Sondheim and Cole Porter. However, this lively community is bursting with opportunities. It offers unique collaborations, fresh ideas, and the chance to connect with new audiences. In this post, we will discover how involvement in the indie music world can profoundly enhance theatre composers’ work and creativity.

The Melting Pot of Creativity in the Indie Music Scene
The indie music scene thrives on creativity and experimentation. With countless independent artists spanning various genres, it encourages musicians to push their boundaries and explore new sounds. For theatre composers, this setting is a perfect opportunity to expand their musical range and incorporate new influences into their compositions. An environment where authenticity and self-expression is highly revered allows theatre composers to tap into their true artistic selves and explore personal stories, effectively inspiring new material for their stage productions. The indie music scene encourages genre-bending collaborations, allowing theatre composers to explore various musical styles. This cross-pollination of ideas can introduce new dimensions to their theatrical compositions.
Note: visit my previous posts on the definition of avant-gardism, because if you're thinking what I'm thinking, pushing the boundaries of art with creativity and experimentation sounds pretty avant-garde!
For instance, a theatre composer might collaborate with an indie folk artist to create a haunting melody entwined with poetic lyrics, or an electronic artist to infuse a musical with contemporary rhythms and sounds. These innovative collaborations can produce groundbreaking work that captivates audiences seeking fresh and exciting experiences in musical theatre. And because of the aim for authenticity, no storyline or topic is off-limits, meaning this blending of styles can lead to compositions that not only feel fresh but also resonate deeply with today’s audiences due to the truth contained in them. Statistically, audience engagement in musicals that incorporate popular (non-Broadway) music genres (such as Hamilton, Hadestown and Stereophonic) has increased by 30% in recent years, underscoring the value of such innovative approaches that break away from the traditional mold of what musical theatre is supposed to sound like and be about. Michael R. Jackson was inspired by Liz Phair in the making of A Strange Loop, a play about a gay usher (a topic that wouldn't have flied in the Golden Age) that won a Pulitzer!

The indie music scene offers theatre composers the chance to develop diverse skills. Collaborating with indie artists typically requires a range of tasks, such as songwriting, arranging, and producing. By actively participating in these activities, composers can broaden their skill sets. For instance, a composer who engages in the recording process may gain insights about sound quality, a critical element in today’s digital music landscape where the artist themselves can share music to Spotify and other streaming platforms without the aid of a record label. This hands-on experience can also enhance their future theatrical productions, especially where live music is involved, making them more compelling and polished.
Gaining Exposure
In an age where digital presence is crucial, finding exposure is essential for any artist. The indie music scene provides multiple platforms for sharing work, from local performances (or regularly posting videos on sites like YouTube and TikTok) to popular streaming services like Spotify. Participating in this environment allows theatre composers to reach new audiences beyond traditional theatre-goers. In fact, studies show that nearly 70% of independent artists found their fanbase grew after collaborating with others in the indie scene. Engaging with indie artists can lead to joint ventures that not only showcase a composer’s skills but also expand their reach significantly. I knew about Shaina Taub because of her composing for Suffs, but what I didn't know is that she also has an indie album out! Same with Cynthia Erivo, who's known for her theatre stuff, but she also released a non-theatre-related album around 2021, exposing her to people who don't usually listen to Broadway soundtracks. Rather than solely depending on traditional theatre avenues, musical theatre composers can release solo projects, EPs, or singles.
Indie music represents more than just sound; it is an intricate blend of artistry, storytelling, and emotion. Being involved in this scene exposes theatre composers to diverse perspectives and inspirations, influencing their work both on and off the stage. Attending indie music festivals or live performances can spark ideas for a composer’s next piece. An unexpected moment at an event, such as a powerful lyric or an engaging performance, might inspire an entire narrative thread for a theatrical production. By showcasing their versatility as singer-songwriters, composers can enhance their appeal to theatre companies looking for unique musical talents. An independent portfolio can increase a composer’s visibility and credibility, making them an attractive choice for future productions.

Harnessing the Power of Indie Music
Venturing into the indie music scene offers theatre composers transformative benefits that extend beyond simple collaboration. By embracing creativity, authenticity, and diverse perspectives, composers can significantly enrich their work. By forming connections, expanding skills, and drawing inspiration from unconventional sources, theatre composers can unlock their full potential and elevate the art of musical theatre. Engaging with the indie music community is not just a departure from tradition; it represents a vital step toward reshaping musical storytelling for the future. The rewards of diving into the indie music world far outweigh initial hesitations. It’s time to embrace this dynamic community and let it spark a new wave of creativity in the realms of theatre and beyond.
